International Etchells Series

In 1988, a sleek and powerful sailboat, the International Etchells, designed by Skip Etchells, appeared on Biscayne Bay. This 30’6” “one design” sloop sailed by a crew of three attracted a group of BBYC sailors who became owners and founded Etchells Fleet 20.

In 1989 a “Mid-Winter Regatta” was scheduled and attracted 8 entries. Ding Schoonmaker donated a perpetual trophy and so was born the “Etchells Series”. The fleet was invited to sail in the reformatted SORC (Southern Offshore Racing Circuit) with a circle in Biscayne Bay. The SORC was abandoned and the fleet expanded their series at BBYC with the addition of the weekend regattas the “Piana Cup” in 1997, the “Florida State Championship” in 1998 and the “Sid Doren Cup” in 2001.

In 2001 Jaguar dealer John Ulbrich became a sponsor of the “Mid-Winter Regatta.” The four weekend events beginning in December and culminating in March have since been designated the “Jaguar Cup Winter Regatta Series.”

In 2008 the series attracted over 90 boats with participants from all over the United States and Canada and from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland and Hong Kong. Ken Batzer has served as the Regatta Chairman since the series inception. Dave Brennan, IRO (International Race Officer), has received international recognition for his innovative regatta management. Tom Piper was elected President of the International Etchells Class in 2006. BBYC has been recognized for its gracious hospitality and excellent onshore management.
